A veneer covers only the tooth’s front surface, at around 1mm thick. A crown covers the whole tooth, at around 2mm thick, and can be made in porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or zirconium. Both are used for discoloured, chipped, cracked, decayed, or crooked teeth, but they solve different problems.

The Core Difference

A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front surface only, while a crown fully encases the tooth on every side. That single difference drives almost every other distinction between them, how much tooth is removed, how strong the result is, and which problems each one can actually fix.

When a Veneer Is the Right Choice

Veneers are the less invasive option, requiring minimal enamel removal, and are ideal for an intact tooth that just needs a cosmetic fix: shape, colour, or minor alignment issues. They work best when the underlying tooth structure is healthy and simply needs its appearance improved.

When a Crown Is the Right Choice

Crowns require more tooth reduction and are the better choice when a tooth has a large filling, has had root canal treatment, or is worn or cracked. Because a crown covers the tooth on every side, it protects and reinforces a tooth that no longer has enough of its own structure left to rely on a veneer alone.

Getting a Veneer: What to Expect

Getting a veneer typically means an impression or digital scan, a possible temporary veneer, then the permanent veneer bonded with cement and hardened under a UV lamp, with a night guard recommended for patients who grind their teeth.

Getting a Crown: What to Expect

Getting a crown follows a similar path: impression or scan, removal of any decayed material, a temporary crown, then a lab-made permanent crown cemented and adjusted at the final visit.

What Neither Option Does

Neither a veneer nor a crown replaces a missing tooth root, that is the job of a dental implant, topped with its own crown once healing is complete. Both are restorations for a tooth that is still present, not a replacement for one that is gone.

How Long Does Each Last?

With proper care, traditional porcelain veneers last 10+ years, and zirconium crowns typically last 10-15 years or more, both depending mainly on oral hygiene, avoiding biting hard objects, and using a night guard if you grind your teeth.

Still Not Sure Which You Need?

The honest answer is that it depends on how much of your natural tooth structure is intact, which a dentist can only confirm with an exam and, if needed, an X-ray. A free consultation is the fastest way to find out whether a veneer, a crown, or an implant actually solves your specific case.
